Fûsen plot
Haruki Murakami, once an esteemed painter, is now the president of a thriving camera company where his son Keikichi also works as one of the department heads. His daughter Tamako has suffered from a fragile body since she was struck by polio as a little girl. She spends a lot of time secluded in her room, immersing herself in her drawings. At the funeral of Haruki's former teacher, he and his wife are reunited with the late teacher's son, Masataka Suzuki, who has roamed Shanghai, Singapore and Paris but now runs a nightclub. When Keikichi visits the nightclub with his lover, the serious widow Kumiko Yamana, Masataka introduces them to the club chanteuse Mikiko Mikihara, with whom Keikichi begins a relationship that will affect the lives of everyone around him.
