Freckles plot

"Thrilling romance of the limber-lost."

While wandering in the Limberlost Woods with her bear Cubby, the young and mischievous Laurie-Lou Duncan meets the unemployed orphan Freckles. Freckles is on his way to James McLean's nearby Lumber Company. Laurie-Lou introduces Freckles to her kind teacher Mary Arden, who then introduces him to James. At Mary's urging, James has Freckles guard the vast Limberlost against wood thieves. With Laurie-Lou's help, Freckles learns about the forest and gradually becomes comfortable in his new environment.
