Fontamara plot

A mountain village in the Abruzzo, ravaged by poverty and earthquakes, is impotent prey to the arbitrariness of a nascent fascist regime. A young powerhouse escapes the leadership role assigned to him by villagers and heads to Rome for work and status. There he is confronted by clandestine anti-fascist resistance. He sympathizes with this and is arrested and killed. The residents of Fontamara unite in a resistance group that will publish its own newspaper.
