Extravagance plot

Mrs. Stanhope is a spendthrift and gets into debt. She wants her daughter Minerva to marry the wealthy financier Alfred Stuart, but she is in love with William Marsden. Thinking Marsden has money, Mrs. Stanhope allows them to marry, but it turns out he only has some copper that is apparently worthless. This doesn't work, so mother tries to bring Stuart back into Minerva's life. This, and Minerva's longing for the nice things she can no longer have, causes a rift between husband and wife.
