"A pennant Winning Panic About Base ball and Blondes!"
Elmer actually doesn't want to leave Gentryville at all, because he loves Nellie. Even if Mr. Wade comes from the Chicago Cubs to persuade him, he wants to decline. The only reason he accepts the offer is because Nellie insists he has to go. In Chicago, Elmer is the king of the field, winning game after game. When Nellie comes to visit him, she sees him kissing Evelyn and wants nothing more from him. When Elmer is also saddled with a gambling debt, he is fed up and disappears just before the decisive game of the Series.
