Die Flucht plot

The chief physician Dr. Schmidt has plans for a research project to reduce premature birth mortality. But it is rejected by the higher authorities. Then Schmidt decides to leave the GDR. He concludes a contract with a western aid organization for GDR refugees. Shortly afterwards, however, his project is nevertheless approved, and he is asked by his international colleagues to lead the DDR section. Moreover, he has apparently found a partner in his new colleague Katharina. Schmidt therefore ignores the deal with the refugee helpers, but now he is being blackmailed by them...
