Der Verdingbub plot
The orphan Max is hired by a farming family. By his foster parents he is only seen as a workhorse and by their own son he is invariably humiliated. But his barrel organ is something no one can take away from him. When the new teacher dedicates herself to him, life only gets worse for Max. The only thing that keeps his will to survive is his friendship with Berteli, also a foster child. Together they dream of Argentina, of a fantasy world where even the pitchforks are made of silver...
