Compromised plot

The illegitimate child Ann works as a maid at Mrs Munsey's boarding house. Sidney Brock, the son of the owner of Brock Mills, is one of her tenants. He is engaged to Connie Holt, a woman from his own social background. Tired of waiting for Sidney because he is so busy with work, Connie visits him at the boarding house and announces her engagement to another man. He is surprised by this and gets drunk. Ann then takes care of him. Pensioner Munsey wakes up to Sidney's loud voice and finds him in Ann's arms, accusing Ann of being just like her mother. To protect Ann, Sidney tells Munsey that they are getting married. However, Sidney's father John Brock strongly disapproves of this marriage.
