For Cal and his friends, they like serious conversations. They only have conversations about architecture, literature, theology or history. Each series of reflections flows seamlessly into the next, repeating endlessly. There are always more footnotes, theoretical perspectives and translations to quote, so many ways to keep everyday life at bay. When Cal, Evelyn, Chris and others exchange all this absurdly specific knowledge, they do so with such genuine ruthlessness that it's hard to suppress a smile, though melancholy is never far away.
