Chicago Calling plot

"$53 means life or death to him!"

Wife Mary Cannon packs her bags and takes her child back to Baltimore in the eastern US, because husband Bill Cannon has no steady job and is unable to properly care for her. On her way to Chicago, she encounters an accident in which her daughter Nancy has to go to the hospital. After the operation, the runaway wife wants to call her mortally concerned husband, but his phone is removed because he hasn't paid his bill.
