From 1626 to 1642, power over France was officially in the hands of King Louis XIII. However, the real power was exercised by Cardinal Richelieu. France was divided by religious wars at the time Richelieu began his task. Richelieu, however, turned France into a global ruler in the following years, making it particularly difficult for the Germans, English and Spaniards.
