Bumbai plot
During a visit to his native village in southern India, journalist Shekhar falls in love with Shaila Banu, a Muslim girl, daughter of the brickmaker Basheer. When Shekhar and Shaila reveal their feelings for each other, their parents become furious and refuse permission to marry. Shekhar leaves for Bombay and Shaila Banu runs away from home to follow him. In Bombay, their relationship meets less resistance and the two lovers get married. They soon have twins. Their one son has a Hindu name, the other an Islamic one. The grandparents have more or less reconciled with the marriage after a few years and are happy with their grandsons. Shekhar, Shaila Banu and the twins live in harmony until their happiness is cruelly disrupted in December 1992 when religious fanatics vandalize the Babri-Masjid temple. Riots are breaking out in many parts of India, including Bombay. Again Shekhar and Shaila are confronted with the division of people into Hindus and Muslims.
