Bonchi plot
Kikuji is the scion of a merchant family from Osaka whose power is inherited through the mother's side. Kikuji's mother instructs him to take care of a daughter to secure the future of the family business. However, Kikuji's wife gives birth to a son and is therefore evicted from the house. He addresses a series of mistresses, but they too can't get Kikuji a daughter.
