Tobey Marshall is ignored by most of the Junior High School kids. Tobey was seriously traumatized by the death of his parents as a result of the attack on the 'World Trade Center' on September 11, 2001. Since then, he has lived with his Uncle Nick and Aunt Jannah. Tobey is a loner who has created his own world in which he believes he is protected by an angel. Tobey befriends young girl Suzy Stanely, who also lives in a fantasy world, and both find that they have more in common than they ever expected. Suzy is also mesmerized by Jim Doder, who leads a double life: in addition to being the most popular basketball player in school, he is involved as a gang leader in a series of local burglaries. When Suzy learns of this, she rejects Jim's affections and remains loyal to Tobey. But then Jim makes life very difficult for both of them.
