Back Pay plot
Hester Bevins is tired of Gerald Smith, who loves her, her employer Finley Department and her hometown Demopolis. With only some clothes with her, she leaves the city with the traveling salesman Al Bloom. Hester goes to New York where she becomes the mistress of Charles G. Wheeler, who takes good care of her. When the Wheelers decide to vacation in Lake Placid, Hester is dropped off at Demopolis. She wants to see what her old city will look like after four years. Hester meets Gerald there again. He thinks she has become a successful career woman and still wants to marry her...
