Arohan plot
Hari Mondal is a poor village farmer who lives with his wife, two sons, brother, aunt Kalidashi - a widow - and her daughter Panchi in the remote Bengali village of Giripur in Birbhum district. The story begins in the mid-1960s, when the Naxalbari uprising spreads across Bengal and oppressed peasants are united by youths who believe in communism and a socialist republic. Hari and his brother Bolai are Borgadars, tillers who plow and harvest the crops on land owned by the Jotdars. Bibhutibhushan Ganguly is the young Jotdar who has just lost his father and now wants to apply new laws to the Borgadas to ensure the greatest profit, while the poor peasant languishes in poverty.
