Alias the Deacon plot

A professional gambler named George Caswell comes to a small town and is mistaken for the new deacon. Deciding that this place is as good as any other, he sticks around scamming the villagers with cards. But Caswell has a heart of gold, and when Phyllis, a girl he befriends, falls in love with reformed crook Jim Adams, he decides to help her.
