Frenchman Pepe Le Moko is a thief who fled France with a fortune in jewelry. Pepe has been living in the almost impenetrable Casbah neighborhood in Algiers for two years now. French justice insists that Pepe be captured as soon as possible, but the cunning inspector Slimane knows that this is only a matter of time. The affable Pepe increasingly sees the Casbah as his prison, especially when he meets the beautiful Parisiènne Gaby, who is visiting the Casbah. Gaby reminds Pepe of the boulevards in Paris, to which he does not dare return. Meanwhile, Gaby arouses the jealousy of Ines, Pepe's Algerian mistress, and threatens to betray him to Slimane.
