During a camping trip with two of his friends, fifteen-year-old Matt Kester finds a mail bag in a mine shaft. The bag was put there years ago by his father, just before his death. The boys take the bag to the post office and hope that they will be well rewarded for doing so. But the only promise one can make at the post office is that the letters will still be delivered. One of the letters is addressed to Matt's mother. In that letter, his father tells that he has discovered an illegal practice in counterfeit stamps.
