A Woman from Java plot

It is 1927 in Java, Indonesia. Planter Willem van Erk is seriously ill, he does not have long to live. Nyai, his concubine, receives a stream of visitors: musicians, political activists, an accountant with bad intentions, religious leaders. Without Van Erk's protection she is a victim of ridicule, exclusion and lack of rights. Nyai's life is a model for the colonial Dutch East Indies that is on its last legs. That life in turn has been reduced to one space.
