A Modern Magdalen plot

Unhappy circumstances and cruel parents force Katinka Jenkins into a deeply dissatisfied existence. The factory foreman becomes attracted to her and makes advances that Katinka abhors. Joe Mercer, a laborer, is in love with Katinka, but the desperate girl chooses Lindsay, the wealthy factory owner. The girl's father promises his daughter's hand in marriage to Joel Brinker in order to secure a small loan. Brinker, a moneylender, then forces himself on her until Katinka leaves home.
