A Gunfighter's Pledge plot
An escaped convict kills the wife and son of ex-Sheriff Matt Austin, who was responsible for the killer's capture. Austin gives chase and catches up with him in a small town saloon. During the ensuing firefight, things go wrong for Austin, the killer escapes and Austin fatally kills a bystander. In penance, Austin agrees to help the wife of the rancher he killed to keep her ranch, which is on the wish list of a powerful baron. The ranch and the land would like to have this because of the valuable water rights.
