Willem & Frieda plot
The second World War. Willem, a gay artist, and Frieda, a lesbian cellist, forge identity papers for Jews living in the occupied Netherlands. But when the Nazis start checking the false papers against centrally kept duplicate documents, Willem and Frieda come up with a daring plan to blow up the Central Administration Office. This would destroy the documents without harming anyone.

Stephen Fry is without a doubt a charismatic personality and born storyteller, but the story of Willem Arondé and Frieda Belinfante, who fought to keep Jews out of the hands of the Nazis during The Occupation, is by no means revealing. Screenwriter Rik Carmichael probably aimed to make it clear that gay heroes have been written out of history, but there is much more attention for the well-trodden paths of De Occupation. I admit: I recently saw 'The Occupation' by Lou de Jong, so it may well be that it is more of a piece of cake for me than for others. For people who are not or much less familiar with the national war history, there is perhaps still something to learn from this.
