When Chueca Dies plot

Chueca is the internationally renowned neighbourhood in the heart of Madrid, a haven for the LGTBQIA+ community since the 90s. Due to the changing political atmosphere and hateful rhetoric from politicians, the neighbourhood has come under the microscope of opponents in recent years. The documentary paints a portrait of a special group of residents: from trans people and drag queens to young, married lesbians and refugees.

Just outside Madrid's city center lies the Chueca neighborhood, traditionally a place where "others" settle. Since the 1990s, these "others" have primarily been people from the LGBTQIA+ community who found a safe haven there, free to be themselves. In recent years, criticism and verbal and physical violence against this community have increased (even there). Dutch filmmaker Ramón Gieling portrayed several of them with a visual style that detracts from the message. The prologue makes it clear that these Chueca residents will regularly stage literary or historical events. The interviews are superficial, the productions are insufficiently introduced (leaving you to guess what they're about), and the acting style is so campy and exaggerated that it's primarily catering to the converted, often confirming rather than undermining the persistent prejudices Gieling aims to combat.
