Watergate plot
In 1972, the Democrats' headquarters in Washington were broken into. Eavesdropping equipment was installed with the aim of sabotage the Democrats' election campaign. A covert operation led by the then president. Nixon denied his guilt for two years until the tapes were released. He lost popular and congressional trust and became the first American president to resign from office.
