Veien til Diyarbekir plot
Documentary in which artist Ciwan Haco takes us back to his homeland through music, lyrics and thoughts. Ciwan lives a quiet life as a husband and father in Gälve, Sweden. Few people here know that he is a famous folk musician and hero among Kurds around the world. He has been a living legend and a symbol for an oppressed people for decades. Kurdistan is spread across Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq and none of these countries recognize the Kurdish people as independent. Governments in the Kurdish regions have blacklisted Ciwan Haco for some time now. The Turkish government is finally allowing the Kurds to celebrate their own national day: 'Newroz', which means new day. Ciwan is invited to Diyarbekir, the Kurdish home port, where almost a million people are waiting for him. After years of waiting, they finally hear their own music and the song 'Diyarbekir - my home', sung by the man who has been their voice in the outside world for the past 25 years. 'The Road to Diyarbekir' brings out many hidden feelings in Ciwan. It is fantastic to meet and speak to his own people in his native language after all these years. But he also notices that 25 years of absence has changed a lot in him.
