The memory of his own disturbed childhood in the dark 1940s prompted director Ivars Seleckis to use this documentary to record how today's Latvian youth grows up. Five Latvian children, from different places in the country, are followed during their first school year. Glebs and Zane both live in Riga; Kārlis already helps out on the farm outside school; with a mother who works in Great Britain, Anete grows up with her grandmother; and Anastasia walks a long way through the woods every day to catch the bus to school. The film not only gives a picture of the children and their diverse backgrounds, but also provides an insight into the Latvian education system, which seems to give the children a lot of freedom and responsibility, and shows the overwhelming landscape throughout all seasons.
