All over Cuba, Mariela Castro – daughter of President Raul and niece of Fidel – is known as a campaigner for gay rights. She herself has been married to a man for years, but she does everything she can to improve the position of sexual minorities in Cuba. Under her inspiring leadership, the state recently launched a treatment program for Cuban transgender people, including psychological help, cross-sex hormones and gender surgery. The state reimburses all costs and the medical treatment is top-notch. Is the socialist island turning into a transgender paradise?
