The Team plot
Ethnic conflict erupted in Kenya after the fraudulent elections of 2007. The supporters of the two main candidates - Kibaki, who belong to the Kikuyu tribe, and Odinga, who belong to the Luo tribe - clashed over the result. Fifteen hundred people were killed and more than half a million Kenyans were left homeless. The soap opera The Team mainly wanted to appeal to a young audience with this subject. They put together a cast from as many ethnic sections of the Kenyan population as possible. The storylines, about the fortunes of a mixed football team, were supposed to encourage a dialogue about Kenyan society in general and the risks of tribalism in particular. In Patrick Reed's documentary of the same name, fragments about the creation of the series are interspersed with interviews with the actors, the producer, the screenwriter, the director and the cameraman. The relevance of their mission becomes painfully clear when tragedy strikes the cast.
