The Self-Made Man plot

On the eve of American Independence Day, 77-year-old Bob Stern creates a video message for his children. On July 5, he is expected in hospital to treat a weak spot in his aorta and he is suffering from prostate cancer. Self-made man Stern, who does not like a languishing final phase of his life in a hospital bed, calculates for his children why he better put an end to his life before he gets to that point. His daughter Susan Stern uses the tape as the basis for a portrait of her father.
