The Pearl plot
The Pearl explores the rough, emotional and physical experience of a middle-aged transgender woman against the backdrop of post-industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest. The film depicts the struggles of those raised as men and become successful and who have reached middle age with a grave secret they can no longer keep. We follow four women, all in extremely early stages of coming out, as they attend the Esprit conference - an annual event in the northernmost part of Washington where transgender women come together in an environment where they can express their true feelings. From here on, we follow the same four women over the course of nearly three years as they struggle through varying degrees of menopause.
