The Mind Game plot

When he was only 14, Sajid Khan Nasiri fled Afghanistan alone. After a two-year journey full of danger and hardship, which he recorded in detail with his phone camera, he arrived in Belgium. There begins a whole new struggle.

The now 18-year-old Sajid recorded his attempt to reach the EU in consultation with Dutch filmmakers Eefje Blankevoort and Els van Driel. At his mother's insistence, Sajid left Afghanistan when he was 14, otherwise both he and his father might be tortured and killed by the Taliban. Several attempts to reach the EU via Bosnia and Croatia have been forcibly stopped, but that hasn't stopped Sajid from continuing to try. Fooling border guards is in fact a 'game' and Sajid has had to complete many 'games' to arrive in the EU. But then 'The Mind Game' begins: the endless waiting under primitive conditions and the distrust of the authorities makes it extra difficult to stay mentally afloat. Obviously one-sided, but this documentary gives a clear voice to the refugees we receive in our country and also makes it clear that a so-called "discouragement policy" has no chance of success and only reinforces the existing problems.
