The Coriolis Effect plot

A parable-like film that juxtaposes the struggle of man and animal against the approaching storm of climate change and uncontrollable pollution. Filmed in the Cape Verde archipelago, also known as the place where hurricanes are born. A recurring storyline is the sea turtles on the archipelago. Cape Verde is one of the largest breeding grounds in the world for these animals. But if temperatures continue to rise, all turtles will hatch as females, which will eventually lead to the extinction of the species.

The Coriolis Effect is a meteorological phenomenon that has a major impact on Cape Verde, an archipelago off the coast of West Africa. The consequences of pollution and climate change are painfully visible in this portrait of a country and its people and animals. Lom and Van Egeraat opt for a limited, minimalist score and let the stunning, often long, unedited footage speak for itself. Residents and environmental activists occasionally provide background information, but there's no narrator, which gives ample space to absorb and reflect on the images. The best nature documentary since The Ancient Woods.
