In December 1995, a shipment of weapons was secretly dropped from a Latvian plane over West Bengal. Inside are British arms dealer and MI5 informant Peter Bleach and Danish development worker and idealist Niels Holck, the mastermind behind the venture. The weapons are believed to be intended for the self-defense of a group of monks and nuns against the communist Left Front, which is currently in power. Bleach's mission is to get the plane safely to India, where Holck will be arrested. But when Holck escapes, Bleach himself is the loser. When he tries to exonerate himself, he finds out that the British secret service prefers to leave him where he is, and so he spends no less than eight years in an Indian cell on false charges. In the meantime, Holck builds a new life and leads a happy family life in Denmark, until in 2010 he is suddenly confronted with a possible extradition to India. This presents Bleach with a dilemma: should he let Holck suffer the same fate as himself, or should he help his former enemy by clarifying this matter?
