Tegen het Vergeten plot
Memories make a person what he is, but what happens to you when you lose them? When you lose tangible memories, or worse, the images in your head, don't you lose the most precious thing you own: yourself? Director Tamara Miranda took this personal fear as the starting point for a universal film. "Against the Forgetting" follows five people battling with their memories. An Iraqi artist incorporates his war experiences, but also fond memories of his native country, in his paintings. An old man no longer recognizes his own life in the photos in the family album, but he literally sings along to Amsterdam folk tunes from his childhood. Several stages further in this process, a woman no longer recognizes herself in the mirror, but entrusts all her love and inner wealth to a plastic doll. A 92-year-old lady cherishes an enormous archive of letters, documents, photos and paraphernalia from her life and the period in the Japanese camp, but has to give up almost all those tangible memories. A photographer talks about his urge to capture the images he encounters on light-sensitive material. He forges the different stories together into a larger story that tells about the collective memory. There is no cure for forgetting.
