Sotto le Nuvole plot
Between Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, the land trembles periodically, and the fumaroles of the Phlegraean Fields pollute the air. The ruins beneath—Pompeii and Herculaneum—tell of a future buried by time. From these traces of history, memories of the subterranean world, in black and white, a lesser-known Naples rises and fills with lives.

Life in Naples is greatly influenced by the threat of volcanic eruptions from Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei. In this beautifully filmed but episodic and disjointed documentary, Rosi follows archaeologists, archaeological museum staff, visitors to historic buildings, Syrian workers, the emergency services, and “ordinary” Neapolitans. The common thread is clear, but a storyline or dramatic build-up is nowhere to be found. Long and tedious.
