"A coming-of-age story set in a world of pigeons and violence"
For young people, there are few prospects in Motherwell, Scotland, where the working class never recovered from the closure of the steel mill in 1997. Gemma was born in that year. Pregnant or behind bars: within the circle of peers in her neighbourhood, these seem to be the only future prospects available here. Yet leaving – as her parents did when they left her with her grandfather as a baby – is not an option for her. In the midst of the mutual violence and the sometimes painful rawness, Grandpa offers her opportunities to channel her anger and frustration. He gives her boxing lessons and teaches her the principles of the pigeon sport.
