Rodnye plot
After the Maidan Revolution in Ukraine in 2013, the Ukrainian-born filmmaker Vitaly Mansky decides to travel through the region and visit his family. By entering into a conversation in front of the camera with relatives in Ukraine, Crimea and Donetsk, he hopes to get a better picture of the influence of all political events on the inhabitants of the area. Mansky takes the viewer on a tour for a year: from May 2014 to May 2015. His mother, grandfather, aunts: everyone speaks out about the situation in the region. Complicated issues are discussed. Is it important where you live or who you want to live with? Events from the world news, such as the downing of flight MH17, are reviewed. During his personal quest, Mansky discovers how the disturbed relationship between Russia and Ukraine causes problems between, among others, his aunts. The longer Mansky travels, the more closely his own family history becomes intertwined with political events. And inescapably, the more he gets hit too.
