Retrograde plot
In early 2021, as the Americans focused on the handover of power, director Matthew Heineman assembled a team and flew to Afghanistan to review the state of the war. By that point, Osama bin Laden had been dead for a decade, the Taliban had been weakened but not defeated, and the US-trained Afghan army held up quite well, yet almost 20 years later there was still no end in sight. That changed almost immediately after Heineman's arrival, when the Biden administration made plans to withdraw.
