India has been a secular state since independence in 1947. Today religious fundamentalism holds a large part of the population of India in its grip. The greatest danger to the extreme social tensions in the nation does not come from Sikh or Muslim separatists, but from Hindu fundamentalists who are calling on the 83% Hindu majority to redefine India as a Hindu nation.
