In the macho world of motorsports, the revered Indianapolis 500 has long been seen as the only race. In May 1977, a decades-long tradition was put to the test, records were smashed and Indy was changed forever. That year, Janet Guthrie — the first woman to attempt to qualify for the Indy — won a spot in the prestigious field of 33 entrants. A year later, having conquered impossible odds, Guthrie assembled her own team to an astonishing success. But just when her career was about to take flight, she suddenly inexplicably came to a halt.
