Purple Sea plot

In 2015, Syrian visual artist Amel Alzakout ventured across to Europe via a smuggler. Off the coast of Lesvos, the overcrowded boat begins to sink. The entire film consists of the spinning images she made from the water: almost abstract close-ups of floating people, waiting for rescue. We see glimpses of fluorescent orange life jackets, dangling legs, tiny feet in white sneakers, a floating pack of cigarettes, life buoys. We hear emergency whistles, screams.
