Purple Hearts plot
More than 1,100 U.S. servicemen have been killed since the war in Iraq began. In addition, more than 8,000 were injured, often very seriously. Blind, disfigured or traumatized by the lack of limbs, they have returned from Iraq and must once again reclaim their place in American society. Nina Berman, a New York-based photographer, shot a series of wounded Iraq veterans and published the book Purple Hearts, Back from Iraq. In this she lets the soldiers speak. Director Roel van Broekhoven visited the people portrayed. In the penetrating film portraits he made of them, he questions them about their war experiences, about how they took up their lives again after their return to the United States and their expectations for the future. And of course it is discussed whether they ever doubt the correctness of the war in which they were wounded.
