Power plot

In the United States, police have been given extraordinary power over the lives of residents. Police determine who is suspicious, define the threats and decide how to respond. They demand obedience and carry the constant threat of violence. Thousands of these interactions take place every day in cities and towns. This documentary examines the accumulation of money, political power and the almost unlimited support of the institution that created the police as we know it today.

Ford examines the prehistory of the American police apparatus to discover how and why the police gained so much power and why officers continue to cross moral boundaries to this day without being punished. Ford views that history primarily from the perspective of non-white Americans, but also effectively exposes the causes of police culture. In doing so, he also shows why residents of poor neighborhoods with a predominantly Black population, in particular, have absolutely no trust in the police. Somewhat exaggerated in places, but undeniably an eye-opener.
