Poule des Doods plot
When it is expected that no next of kin will be present at a funeral, a custom-written poem is recited at the funeral by a well-known poet. What do you write for someone who no one knows anymore and who are we actually doing this for? In Amsterdam alone, an average of fifteen people die each year, and no one will attend the funeral. Sometimes they are people only known by name, sometimes not even that, but one thing they all have in common; no relatives or friends come to their funeral. Under the leadership of poet F. Starik, a group of poets, including Menno Wigman and Maria Barnas, have gathered in the 'Pool of Death'. They accompany the lonely deceased to the grave by means of a poem written for the occasion.
