Anselm Kiefer (1945) is one of the most successful, but also the most controversial artists of post-war Germany. His work is permeated with the darkest pages of German history. In 1993 he moved to rural France, to La Ribaute, an abandoned silk factory near Barjac. Here he started in 2000 on the construction of a gigantic work of art consisting of 48 buildings with various installations, a labyrinth of tunnels, bridges and towers and a number of separate studios, where paintings and works of art are displayed. Documentary maker Sophie Fiennes follows Kiefer at work in this vast area. This is unique because Kiefer has never allowed such extensive and long filming in his 'studio'. Fiennes films Kiefer during the period that he is finishing his work in this field. He moves his work to an underground parking lot near Paris.
