Olland plot
In 'Olland', artist Joost Conijn and two friends take a bike ride through the interior of Morocco, where they are warmly welcomed by the residents. None of the three speaks the language. There is communication with hands and feet about what is going on in the world. Despite the blazing sun, dusty mountains and dangerously bad roads, the three men continue their journey. Their bikes are both exotic and cliché, making them recognizable as Dutch people before they've even said a word. Sitting on cushions, drinking tea and gesturing, they get to know the local population. Huge meals are served on large tables that seem to come out of nowhere. The conversation often turns to the Netherlands, where many of the hosts have lived as immigrants and have later returned.
