New York Cuts plot
Using a static camera, conversations between hairdressers and their clients are followed in six hair salons in New York. At the chic hairstylist in Manhattan, the predominantly wealthy visitors get a hand massage in addition to their regular haircut; also a drink while their shoes are being shined is included. We talk about children and money matters. In a hair salon in Brooklyn, the silence in which regular customers drowsy undergo their treatment, while at the hairdresser in Harlem conversations between a group of West African women degenerate into a cacophony. Together, these observations reveal the multicultural society. There are striking contrasts between rich and poor and black and white. The everyday conversations reveal how the customers and the hairdressers approach life.
