Moving to Mars plot
Since the military coup of 1962, the Karen in Burma have been a persecuted minority. About one hundred and fifty thousand of them reside in refugee camps in Thailand. Their wandering does not end there. In Moving to Mars: A Million Miles from Burma, Mat Whitecross follows two families who find their permanent residence in Sheffield, England. Whitecross first familiarizes us with village life in the camp. A human community, as someone says. After the tears of saying goodbye, we can really feel the culture shock. The elderly are tense, hopeful, insecure. The children eagerly take in everything with wide, curious eyes.
