Molly & Mobarak plot
Molly & Mobarak is a contemporary Romeo and Juliet story about young Australian teacher Molly and 22-year-old Afghan refugee Mobarak. He belongs to the Hazaras, a population group that is having a hard time under the Taliban rule. At the end of 2001, a group of Hazaras ends up in the small town of Young. Here one could use some cheap labor and some of the young men are employed in the local slaughterhouse. Molly helps Mobarak with the English language, teaches him to drive and introduces him to her home. It seems that Mobarak integrates smoothly into this small community, until it turns out that he is in love with Molly and that these feelings are not mutual. In addition, racist feelings are brewing in Young, especially after the Bali bombing in October 2002, which killed many Australians.
